Tame General Information

Release 5.0

Overview

Tame will solve most problems that are encountered when running DOS applications in Windows.  Tame also improves the Windows-DOS environment to optimize application responsiveness, reduce CPU usage and provides a more flexible console interface.

Getting Started

Tame will automatically run with each DOS application.   The benefits of Tame should be apparent with each DOS program that is launched.   In most cases, keyboard response becomes lightning fast while CPU usage is kept to a minimum.

In order to install and evaluate Tame the following steps are recommended.

1.      Install Tame.  The latest version of the setup program is posted at http://www.tamedos.com/downloads.

2.      Test the DOS application.  If problems are found, consult the Frequently Asked Questions document and contact support@tamedos.com if you need additional assistance.

3.      Review optional features of Tame, and change settings to suite your environment.

4.      Test with normal usage for a period of time.

Upgrade Notes

If you have an earlier version of Tame installed, it is recommended that you remove it prior to installing this upgrade.  If custom options that were required with releases of Tame prior to release 4.5, those custom options are probably not appropriate for this release.  Tame can be more effective if they are not supplied.

If you have a license for a previous release of Tame, that license may be valid for Release 5.

Why use Tame?

Most DOS applications simply run better when Tame is used.   These are a few reasons why.

·         Improved application responsiveness

·         Support for more users on a multi-user system

·         Enhanced user interface with the Tame console

·         Centrally monitor and manage DOS application usage

·         Peace of mind.    With Tame, you may run DOS applications that are needed.  Tame takes care of making sure the program runs efficiently and trouble free.

Problems Tame can Solve

Some applications have expectations that are not met in a multi-user system, or behave in a way that causes problems. Tame can provide an isolation layer to solve problems like this. If your application exhibits any of the following symptoms when run in Windows NT, Tame can make the problem go away.

·         Uses 100% of the CPU

·         Application changes the system date

·         Application forces the console to full screen mode

·         Application uses file locks excessively or incorrectly

·         Only one user at a time should start the application

·         Printing is delayed, or does not start until you exit the application

·         Application depends on BIOS services that are not implemented

Performance Improvements

·         CPU usage is reduced by allocating the processor more effectively.     On a multi-user system, this allows a system to support more users while also improving performance that each user experiences.

·         Keyboard response is improved considerably.  In many cases, keyboarding delays are eliminated completely, and keyboard response for a DOS application will rival that of a native 32 bit Windows application.

·         Key repeat (e.g. cursor keys) and paste operations are considerably faster in most cases.

·         The keyboard remains responsive even while other DOS applications are doing heavy processing.   Tame can help interactive sessions receive preferred treatment for the fraction of a second it takes to process most keystrokes.

System Administration

·         Centrally monitor execution of DOS programs that are currently running on a system

·         Prevent users from closing the DOS console

·         Systems with multiple processors may be tuned to ensure sufficient CPU is always available for interactive response.

·         Extensive logging capability, ranging from a single line to summarize each program run, to a detailed list of what happened for each program screen.

·         Detailed diagnostic tracing that may be used to diagnose problems with the DOS program, or to determine what Tame settings may improve usage of the application.
